I didn’t expect to find myself creating another piece about Katrina’s devastation with this week’s Illustjavascript:void(0)ration Friday theme of depth. I didn’t quite understand why the words depth perception kept rising up in my head without an accompanying image…but I remained patient, knowing it would come.
Little did I know that my mind would be overwhelmed with images after reading an article in National Geographic from October 2004…an article that dropped my jaw and rendered me speechless. I was instantly moved to illustrate how the Gulf Coast, as well as many other natural habitats in this world, are disappearing before our eyes and causing “natural” disasters. This article, titled “Gone With the Water” is not political and it’s not hype…it is scientific research that predicted (with details) what we witnessed two weeks ago: “Thousands drowned in the murky brew that was soon contaminated by sewage and industrial waste. Thousands more who survived the flood later perished from dehydration and disease as they waited to be rescued. It took two months to pump the city dry, and by then, the Big Easy was buried under a blanket of putrid sediment…It was the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States.”
Read the rest of the article…and tell me if this doesn’t give you goosebumps.

hey there,
very touching and moving piece of work here, the texture and chaos says it all
M
Incredible piece, and article. Your work is super!
ooo awesome! nice collage, everything ties together so well in this one. my 2 fave points are the horizon line and the warning of objects in the mirror. nice touch!!
I really love your pieces! So much interest, depth and there seems to be passion. Keep going at it!
Beautiful and strong piece !
hey Kelly
I posted a comment on written down. This page really speaks to me. I am impressed with all the details and the way you did the lines – it really draws the eye…
Love you collages they are so interesting and moving
I think yours is one of the first entries to have so much (pardon the pun) depth! That article is saying what people have known for years. I won’t go into a political ramble, but your picture is a fantastic interpretation of all that it represents.
very nice message…the “vanishing point” is so alarming….and then today LA has an electricity outage. please keep up the beautiful work…very touching during these times…=^..^=
Love this piece–your work has such complexity. I’m really drawn into all of the elements and how they come together as a whole. And I love the sentiment, too.
Coming from a family of Conservationists and having spent half my life in tents I congratulate you on your informative and important post! There is a stark harshness in your black linage that emphasises your thoughts. I particularly like mixed media work and this piece couldn’t say more about reason for jaw dropping and speechlessness. Love the ‘vanishing point’!! PS I’m a girl :)
I will certainly read the article when I have a little more time…your excerpt ccertainly piqued my interest. Your collage is very powerful, and even without your explanation, the message would have come through. Again..such beautiful colors and textures. Your style is unique and very special.
I just read the article, and yes, I literally have goosebumps.
Your collage is wonderful
Your art never fails to move me.
So well done again..in so many ways. I really wish I could look at your work close up (and in person!) – I know it’s loaded with richness that I can’t even see…and what I can see is so awesome! The article you linked is absolutely incredible. Thanks so much for sharing!
Wow, this is truly an amazing piece… I am in awe. Thank you for the article, I am going to take some time to read it now…
Thank you for this link. I rarely watch tv, and avoid the news (and more so since the last big election) because I have a hard time distancing myself from the pain that is there on a daily basis. I had heard what had happened and added my prayers to the fray, but the reality of the sitution all these miles away hasn’t truly hit me yet.. it’s hard to take in. I think I am ready to read this now. New Orleans will always be the city of music to me.
AWESOME!
